Potent Poppy

The poem states, “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow … between the crosses row on row”. Did you know the poppy began to spread in Europe after the soils in France and Belgium had large amounts of lime left over from the rubble during the First World War. This is what also caused the flowers to grow around the grave sites of the war dead. The poppy symbolizes both sleep and death and is worn to honour those who died serving their countries.
